In many ways, I was lucky growing up. My parents were weird and our lives were chaotic, but we were in church most every Sunday, so my siblings and I grew up with a bible-based foundation of what was right and wrong.
But that was very much the norms back when I was a kid. There was a collective understanding in America of what was moral decency. People feared God. Kids played outside without fear of being kidnapped. There weren’t school shootings, and everyone knew their neighbors and socialized with them.
Now, there is no collective understanding of any morals, and self desire rules the land. God is openly mocked, and fear is the order of the day. We live in an age of un-enlightenment.
Christianity seems to give people a weird kind of insight – strong believers appear to understand things a little differently, and see facts a little clearer. When someone propose a moral conundrum that seems a no-brainer, I often find myself staring at them opened mouthed wondering are you serious? You actually think that way? They will argue about their rights as a woman while sentencing their unborn child to death. They flaunt sexual impurity and mock the one who is waiting for a ring. They call Christians unaccepting, yet praise Islam while ignoring it’s debase view of women and homosexuals. They scream about feminist empowerment while prancing around half dressed daring any man to look at them as sex objects.
I don’t understand the logic behind their arguments. How do they not see the glaring flaws? It’s like their minds are accepting any and all ideas they are exposed to no matter how oxi-moronic.
Ephesians 6:17 says “take up the helmet of salvation and the sword of truth…” That helmet is your brain’s primary defense against outside sources and it starts working from the first moment you put it on. New Christians often sense it, suddenly seeing things as if for the first time. They’re seeing with their helmet on, viewing things through mercy and moral rightness. A seasoned Christian constantly uses their salvation as their moral guide. Also, they understand that headgear, like any piece of armor, needs to be keep in working order. They reinforce it by scripture study and fellowship with other Christians.
Oh, to be as innocent as little Pip, but no, your old helmet must come off. It holds worldly thoughts and ideas. There’s a new, stronger helmet waiting made just for you. All you have to do is take off the old one and accept the new.
Because, as much as we would like to deny it, a war is coming. Battle lines are being drawn. Make sure your armor is secure and ready. Would you rather trust in your salvation or the world’s shifting ideas of morals?
